The best area in Varanasi is not the same for every traveller. A pilgrim planning early Kashi Vishwanath darshan needs a different base from someone prioritising cafés, road access or a late-night train. Choose the area around your hardest daily journey—not around a generic “best hotel” list.
Godowlia and the old-city pilgrimage area
This is the strongest base when Kashi Vishwanath Temple, Dashashwamedh Ghat and the old lanes are the centre of your trip. You save repeated cross-city travel, but you should expect walking, crowds, narrow lanes and vehicle restrictions. Ask any property for its exact approach route; “near the temple” can still mean a difficult final kilometre with luggage.
Assi Ghat
Assi is useful for travellers who want morning riverfront activity, a somewhat wider road network and more cafés. It is not automatically the best choice for repeated Kashi Vishwanath visits. Map the journeys you will actually make and account for traffic rather than comparing straight-line distance.
Cantonment and railway-station side
This area can simplify train arrivals, road transport and larger vehicles. The trade-off is daily travel toward the main ghats and temple corridor. It makes sense for a short transit stay or travellers whose priority is road access rather than walking into the old city.
